The Suzuki GSX-R 1100 1989 (K model) motorcycle, received the first of the now legendary, harmonious and strong engine of 1127 cc air cooled oil (formerly housed a 1052cc engine), the first of the 1100 “Slingshot”.

A new heavier, shorter and stiffer chassis based on the previous year. Testers motorcycle magazines gave rave reviews to this bike, but something changed between tests and the arrival of the motorcycles to dealers. The Suzuki GSX-R 1100 1989 sold in stores suffered from some problems of maneuverability. Some commented that the change could be the fault geometry. Others said that there was nothing wrong with the chassis, the problem was in the suspensions, which were poorly regulated standard.

Whatever it was, it was thought that the standard bike was difficult to drive and many motorcycle magazines advising buyers to avoid the model Suzuki GSX-R 1100 1989. This was an attitude that was reinforced with the death of the pilot Suzuki Phil Mellor, on the Isle of Man in 1989 he ran the race with a motorcycle Suzuki GSX-R 1100 1989. Jamie Whitham also crashed in the same race and it was enough for the authorities to ban race of big bikes competition for several years.
